The Mariazzi: let’s play marriage!

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

The wedding is a party celebrating love – in first instance – then family and friendship, shining in the happiness of the most important day of your life and – very important – giving a lot of FUN! So after the religious or institutional function, in the church or in the town hall; after kissing all invited people congratulating you; after having taken photos with parents and grandparents, old friends and cousins; so, after all this, the party starts: so everybody enjoys the time together eating, drinking, then singing … ok, now let’s start with the music and we all dance like crazy … then, then…? Have you ever thought of having a wedding played at your wedding? That sounds funny, doesn’t it?!

In the Venetian theater of mid 1400′s there is a typical short composition called Mariazzo or Mariazo. In the form of a comedy, the Mariazzo is based on a canvas, which is a text tracing few basic elements of the plot of a work, just giving a general idea of the facts and people involved, without entering excessively into details, in fact only a trace for the improvisations of the actors, who acted and expressed all their skills, sometimes changing words and moves depending on their audience (look at the picture: it’s my handsome boyfriend during one of his performances!). Have the cake and eat it all!

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Have you ever heard about mini wedding cakes? I haven’t! This is why I would like to tell you something about them and Donatella, the Italian artist who patiently makes them.
I found her blog a few days ago and I completely felt in love with it! It is a collection of lovely creations which are real works of art and devotion!

I was particularly impressed by Donatella’s tiny wedding cakes which are 4 up to 5cm high, depending on the number of tiers, made of sugar (included the tiny roses you can see on the picture!) and then fully edible.

I was thinking you can use them for your wedding day in many ways: they give a nice touch of elegance and colour on tables together with place cards ; they are also a perfect treat for your guests at the end of the meal; or they can even replace the traditional favours (a good idea, as suggested by Donatella, is to put them into a transparent box with a nice satin ribbon). Anyway your guests  would be nicely surprised and they could also say: “I had the cake and I ate it all!”

Have a look at Donatella’s tiny wedding cakes - her blog is in Italian but you don’t need explanations to be inspired by her pictures!

Romantic shoots in the abbey on a winter day

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Take a cold winter day, a wedding and an enchanted abbey in the pre Dolomites landscape. Mix them together and you will get the very best of romantic venues, Santa Maria Abbey in Follina (Veneto).

It may have been only the 12nd of December, almost two weeks before Christmas, and there was already a lot of happiness and joy all around! Paola and Angelo had been planning their wedding for months and the big Day had arrived!

There was no snow, but a cold winter sun which was giving the perfect light for some romantic pictures.
They had carefully chosen the location for their shoots with the photographer and Santa Maria Abbey seemed to be the right place: although the cloister’s garden was covered with a white biting frost and no roses brightened the location, the abbey was still preserving its beauty.

After their wedding ceremony Paola and Angelo reached the abbey where they started playing and running around the open gallery where this shoot was taken.
The weather was freazing but the atmosphere was great…I love this picture! (more…)

Friuli castles open their doors to the public…

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Spring is now back and there are a series of events going on to promote our wonderful region Friuli Venezia Giulia. Most people might not know there are many medieval castles in Friuli and it’s always a challenge to have the opportunity to visit them… Next week-end on March 27th and 28th, Strassoldo Castles in Udine will open their usually closed doors for an event called Spring: flowers, water, and castles.

During that day, people will have the chance to visit the castles and the green area surrounding them. They will also have  the opportunity to see local hand-crafts exhibitors and to taste local food and Collio wines.

This place is certainly worth a visit on Sunday… We’ll go there for you and will let you know details and comments after our visit! It could be the ideal place for a wedding!

The ancient elegance of a city hall open gallery

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

When choosing a civil ceremony for your wedding in Pordenone, a small city an hour far from Venice, you are given different venue options. La Loggia of the city hall, an ancient open gallery dated back to medieval times, is one of these alternatives.
The gothic style city hall stands in the most ancient area of Pordenone, the heart of the medieval city, close to what was once the city’s harbour connected with the Noncello river.
La Loggia
is an open-sided roofed gallery, with some arches surrounding it, which stands along the front of the city hall. Local historians say that this is the place where local market, justice and charlatans performances were taking place in medieval times. (more…)

A red wedding dress to suit my personality

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

A lot of people asked me the reason why I chose a red wedding dress. I was not looking for originality at all costs, in my mind it was not an unconventional or transgressive choice. I didn’t want to shock anyone or to create a scandal.

When I started trying traditional white wedding dresses, I found out that they absolutely did not suit me.  I think I have a quite baby face and in white I really looked like a convent girl coming back from school! That could not be more distant from my real personality. (more…)

Why is UK wedding stationery so creative?

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

I would like to share a few hot impressions on our way back from the National Wedding Show in Birmingham, a good excuse to come to the UK and meet Stefania as well as the ideal chance to feel the atmosphere of what a wedding show in the UK is like.

We have been impressed by most of the wedding stationery exhibitors – we couldn’t stop observing their stand details, their set up and their decoration; the great design and style choices hanging on the walls led us to the conclusion that UK providers simply do it better than anyone else and unless you decide to go for diy invitations, you definitely should choose UK wedding stationary – either you get married in the UK or abroad! Lost in Venice looking for the mysterious Ruyi

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Narrow, nice calles, canals and bridges; slim, elegant gondolas, wide, hidden campos; beautiful churches and Palazzos: in one word, Venice.
But who is the most famous Venetian in the world? Difficult to say, nevertheless one of the best known is for sure Marco Polo, the Venetian merchant who had travelled to the Far East in the 1200’s. Not many people know that he brought back to Venice a powerful amulet called Ruyi – the ancient magical sceptre of Kublai Khan, lost afterwards with the tomb of Marco Polo.

Very curious about this story I have recently learnt that the power of the sceptre is still alive today, and that the Ruyi can still be in Venice, hidden somewhere!! I was so impressed and excited by this story that last February I decided to go to Venice and try to find out more about the Ruyi

I had heart there is an cultural organization,  Whaiwhai,  who organises a sort of game  fact in which you step into the script of a story that plays out inside the city looking for Ruyi. All you need to do is to buy one of their books, send a text to the mobile phone number you find in it and so the game starts. (more…)

What better than orchids for my bouquet?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

I have read in some bridal magazines that Bon Ton would not recommend exotic flowers for a wedding… I’m not quite sure whether orchids are considered as exotic as Papyrus or Bamboo really… but white orchids were the flowers I wanted really for my bouquet, so I didn’t worry too much!

While my caterer was looking after our tables’ centerpieces following my indications, I personally took care of my bouquet with my preferred fleuriste in Pordenone. It took her a few minutes to figure out what she would prepare for me: a modern composition which was decorated with some fabric used for my dress in order to give the bouquet the right touch of colour.

And my fleuriste really got it! It was delivered by my bridesmaid on the morning of my Day - a fab modern wired wedding bouquet featuring white Phalenopsis orchids with greenery and trailing grasses. Some orchids were cascading asides giving thus the bouquet an elongated nice shape. Together with some laces of my bronze coloured dress the bouque had a creative sort of white wicker small ball which gave an informal and funny effect – that really reflected the spirit of the day!
