DIY Christmas at home

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Hello lovely ladies!

I’ve just come back from Italy where I spent some amazing Christmas holiday! I’m a bit sad but happy to go back to my little house too!
On Christmas day I organised a big fat Italian dinner at mine (there were 13 of us!) and had fun with my sister and MrB to arrange the decorations for our table – my mum wanted to remain the queen of the kitchen, so no way she let us cook something!

We went for a traditional red themed table, using a long red runner on a white table cloth, paper tissues in white and red colours, red glasses and white plates from my mum’s wedding!
The flowers part was the most difficult one. I got some inspiration from the Christmas design to order photos by Interflora and tried to personalised them with something simpler…so we went for pine brunches (from my garden), two white roses, a few cinamon sticks and coloured ribbons using a jam jar. We used the same type of vase, but smaller, for the candles, which we decorated with some pine brunches again.

My sister was the creative behind the menus, the best thing! I managed to make two heart shaped holders out of some old wire…

Under the Christmas tree…

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Hi girls,

Have just made it! A couple of weeks right before Christmas! I was thinking the other week I would never complete my DIY Christmas gifts on time! Thank you Maya for sleeping so well last saturday afternoon!

Here I am with my almost-ready-to-bake chocolate muffins glass jars!

A cure idea I have to admit I got inspired by after surfing on the internet a while ago! I am so proud of them that I will certainly propose this idea as favours to one of our 2012 bride-to-be in Venice! Shhh… more to come then!

Here you are with what you need for the jar:
> Hermetic glass jar
> Lace ( great for a Venice theme wedding! This would recall the Burano island lace tradition!)
> Packthread
> Beverage Glass Napkin vintage style
> Your creativity!

I put in there all ingredients needed to bake chocolate muffins ( with the exception of milk, butter, and eggs, for obvious reasons…), but be creative, and fill these jars with whatever comes on your mind!!!

Enjoy!

Maya’s little lilac rabbits coffee break…

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Hi there!

While starting to prepare the glass lanterns with the lilac candles for our upcoming wedding in Tuscany in september ( remember?!), I suddenly thought that Maya is turning 8 months old today! And shame on me, since my return to work in June I haven’t been good at preparing any yummy yummy thing anylonger for her…mmm… for me and her dad actually…

I looked around the messy house for some lilac theme stuff I would use in my pics set, and then I saw Maya’s wooden rabbits staring at me with their nice smiles!!!

Pick me up! Pick me up!

And hop, hop, hop, here I am with a new idea: an after lunch Italian coffee break with my French touch lilac lanterns Bonne Maman and my French touch honey madeleines

My Honey Madeleines ( for 16 of them):
2 eggs
100grs flavour
100grs salty butter
100grs sugar
2 spoons of Italian quality sweet honey ;-)
1 coffee spoon of cake powder yeast
1/2 lemon twist ( I love lemon!)
And here we are! Bon Appétit!

Pink & red breakfast

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

What best than a surprise to start a Sunday morning?
I like to spoil MrB with special treats some now and then, so this morning I have prepared for him a warm cup of strong Italian coffee (he loves it!) served in my new set of pottery, then I made a delicious and light fruit cake (which is a quite typical Italian cake for weddings, expecially during summer). Last touch, I have added a small vase (a jam vase!) with some  pink and red dalia flowers and few other decorations I had in the house…

ITALIAN COFFEE. I bought a nice set of coffe cups by Pip Studio, a Dutch company which has created this new collection of colourful pottery…have a look at them they’ve got really cool stuff! I also used a pocker card with a little message for MrB (Buon giorno!)

WEDDING CAKE. Then I made a fruit cake which is a typical Italian cake – I leart how to do it when I was 8 years old and I’m still making it because I think it’s delicious and quick, so a good way to impress your guests!

Last but not least the TABLE CETREPIECE. I never thought of dalia flowers, but yesterday morning I went to the town market and they were on offer, plus I was impressed by their vibrant red colour, so I thought to give it a go and see if I could get a nice centerpiece for MrB breakfast table. The ones I bought had very long empty stalcks, so I thought to cut them and put them in a small vase. I wanted a very simple, not pretencious centerpiece and that why I decided to use a jam jar…The result is this small and cute centerpiece, which fits quite well with the rest of the decorations…

By the way, MrB enjoyed the cake very much…just half left!

Ladybird, Ladybird…have a nice cake with me!

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Happy sunny monday everyone!

While baking something nice for my little Troussepinette Maya who turned 6 months yesterday, I found in my stuff a pretty funny picture or message holder ladybird shape that would be an excellent idea as a creative table place card holder for your wedding!

This is one of Lara Marchetti’s creations made of felt and boiled wool material.

Lara works in Rimini, and creates place card holders as well as table seating plan and tens of other favors creative items!

They do exist in different shape and set a funny tone to your wedding dinner. And then, being initially a picture holder, your guests will love finding a favor waiting for them!

A Strawberry Flavour Mother’s Day

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

Hi there!

After beeing a bride, now I’m a mother too! And since today it’s Mother day in Italy I thought to cook something for my family…Well, I should be the one today receiving some gifts from my lovely daughter and husband, but Maya is too small, and Mr G is not the kind of man that has ever impressed me with gifts on the expected-gifts-supposed-to-be-days!

So I cooked a new Tiramisu’ version made with strawberries which could consider as an alternative to traditional sponge wedding cakes.

Strawberry Italian Wedding Cake

A yummy yummy fresh recipe easy and quick to do. Have a chat with your caterer!

The art of butter frosting! No milk please!

Saturday, April 23rd, 2011

Happy Easter everyone!

While waiting for the British Royal Mail to deliver the new fancy cupcakes tins I ordered in Ebay almost one month ago :-( I keep on practicing the art of cupcake baking! A good idea for a wedding dessert?!

Well, not easy I have to say, looks more like a challenge really!

Chapeau to the cupcakes professionals whose blogs and websites I’ve been visiting on the last weeks! But fine, I’m doing my utmost, in my modest kitchen, with my modest equipment, and last but not least, with Maya keeping on being REALLY PATIENT while mummy is baking…

chocolate_vanilla_cupcake_italian_coffee

After a first couple of tries that have been complete failure ( in my view, there’s no need for milk in the butter frosting), here you are with what I’m going to propose my husband’s family tomorrow!

For more than 10 years, I’ve been simply cooking nothing for Gianluca’s family on occasions such as Christmas or Easter! But since I’m a wife and a mother – well, since less than 2 years ;-) things have changed!

Hopefully they enjoy my chocolate cupcakes! Happy Easter everyone!

Table decorations at mum’s house in Venice

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

When I went to visit my mum at her house near Venice, last month,  I didn’t know I was supposed to help her getting rid of all the old stuff she had stored in her basement for ages…

Not too bad in the end, because I discovered an awful lot of little dusted treasures we all had forgotten of a while ago.
Hundreds of postcards from the ’30 or ’40 with lovely photos of the good old Italy (from Venice to Lago Maggiore), which had the same intense smell of old books; a complete pottery set whit floral decoration belonged to my great grandmother; an old coffee grinder rescued from a bin by my grandfather at least twenty years ago…and so on, I was so surprised every little object has a story behind it…

So, guess what I did?
Yes, I selected the ones which I really liked because of their shapes, colours or past and I created a wedding table composition! The only thing I bought was the blue hyacinth and pink buttercup bouquet.
I used an old table my mum had in her garden and moved it under an olive tree…I really wanted to give the idea of an Italian wedding table

Since I had hundreds of postcards I thought to use them in two ways: one was like placehorders – so a postcard from Venice or from another wedding destination for each guest, maybe with a nice message from the couple (I will work on it to try and show you something), plus guests could keep it as a little present to bring home.
The second way was to hang some postcards on the olive tree using old pegs, just to decorate and make the “venue” more personal and warm…

Hope you like it! By the way,  my mum and I spent the whole afternoon going through all these things just to realise we didn’t have the courage to throw anything away – so we close all the boxes we open and promise to check them again in another couple of years!
